What Is Reiki?

The word Reiki (pronounced ray key) is Japanese. It is the amalgamation of two words,

"rei" which means both universal in the sense of omnipresent and all-encompassing,
                 and also spiritual wisdom, and

"ki" which means the same as prana in Sanskrit,or chi in Chinese; the vital life force
               within everything alive.

Reiki works by the channelling of energy through the practitioner into the client helping
to harmonise mind, body and spirit.

Reiki can be translated as "spiritually guided life force ". It creates and sustains everything in existence and can be used to transform, re-create and heal.

Reiki is also the one-word descriptive name for an Art of Natural Healing that was discovered and developed about one hundred years ago in Japan through the dedication and experience of Mikao Usui, 1865-1926.

Dr. Mikao Usui a Japanese pioneer physician and spiritual seeker undertook an extensive study and in depth search of the healing phenomena of history's greatest spiritual leaders. Through travel, study, research and meditation, he evolved a healing system based on ancient Buddhist teachings written in Sanskrit. He spent the rest of his life practicing and teaching this method of natural healing.

The Usui System of Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who are trained in the original traditions of Reiki and whose personal and professional lives are committed to this healing art and the lifestyle that it engenders.
It is a wonderful form of healing and is non-intrusive, as you remain fully clothed. The practitioner channels universal energy guided into releasing any blocked energy in the mind, body and soul therefore increasing the bodies’ own natural healing power.

How Does Reiki Treatment Work And What Happens During A Reiki Session?
Reiki is a Holistic form of healing and treats the physical body and mind together. Reiki energy works to unblock physiological areas that can create emotional or physical injury. During the session, the recipient lays on a couch, fully clothed removing only shoes, belts and jewellery for comfort. The practitioner will then place their hands, gently on or over the recipients’ body in several positions. No sensitive parts of the body are touched and the recipient simply needs to relax during the complete session. During treatment, recipients may experience a tingling sensation in the treatment area. Other sensations experienced may be warmth or even icy cold.

How Long Is A Normal Reiki Session?
The average Reiki Session will last approximately one hour. However, this can vary depending upon the level of healing required. Most recipients feel completely relaxed after ten to fifteen minutes and as the mind slows down, the muscles relax and release tension. At this stage, many recipients may fall asleep.

Who Can Benefit From Reiki And Are There Any Known Reactions?
As with all holistic treatments, Reiki treats the whole person to create balance within the system and not simply a disease or illness. Reiki is not harmful in any way to the recipient therefore anyone can receive Reiki. Even if a recipient is in good health, they will still gain from Reiki treatment in terms of assisting with relaxation levels and strengthening an individual's immune system. Most people feel an improvement after an individual Reiki session. Some, on occasion, have a mild reaction, for example, a headache. This normally passes quite quickly.
