Aromatherapy
This treatment is designed to help, cure or heal by the correct use or application of essential oils obtained from plants. The treatment involves body massage using specifically selected essential oils.

What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the use of pure essential and absolute oils, for psychological and physical well-being. Aromatherapy is derived from two words:

Aroma - meaning fragrance or smell
Therapy - meaning treatment

Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment, which can have a profound effect on the mind, body and emotions. The use of aromatic oils goes back at least 2,000 years BC. However, it wasn't until the 1920s that Aromatherapy, as we know it today came into effect. A French chemist called Gattefosse discovered the remarkable healing abilities of lavender oil after severely burning his hand during an experiment. Scientists and healthcare professionals through experimentation and treatment of various physical and psychological disorders have developed this work.

An Aromatherapy Treatment and the benefits

A professional Aromatherapy massage combines the soothing and healing of touch therapy with the therapeutic properties of Essential Oils to promote physical, psychological and spiritual well-being. This health giving treatment can be an invigorating or deeply relaxing experience.

What are essential oils and what do they do?
Essential oils are extracts from different parts of a plant, be it from the leaves, flowers, stem, bark, roots, or the fruit of the plant. In certain plants, different oils are extracted from different parts of the same plant with significantly different properties. There are many essential oils, each with it’s own unique property, which can be utilized by the body to aid health and prevent disease. Essential oils have been found to provide both psychological and physical benefits when used correctly and safely. The essential oils taken from plants and used in Aromatherapy have been described as their 'life force' - they are essential to the plants' biological process, as well as being the substance, which gives them their scent. Synthetic oils, even if chemically similar, will lack all the natural elements, and that vital life force, that make essential oils so valuable therapeutically. The majority of essential oils produced in the world market are used in the food flavour and fragrance industry, so essential oils are often found on the market adulterated with similar essential oils, chemicals and synthetics. Not all ready-made aromatherapy products labelled with the word 'aromatherapy' are pure and natural. Products that contain artificial ingredients do not provide true aromatherapy benefits. At worst, they provide no benefit.

Using Essential Oils

Essential oils are versatile and can be used in many ways. As each oil has different properties, it is necessary first to decide what condition you wish to treat. Once selected, the oils may be used in a massage application, inhalation, and vaporization or in a bath. Essential oils are powerful and only small amounts are required during treatment for effective and maximum benefit.
When used in massage and bathing, essential oils are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. Essential oils that are inhaled into the lungs are believed to offer both psychological and physical benefits, the oil molecules stimulate scent receptors in the brain that, in turn, trigger a response in the part of the brain that influences heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance. If not done correctly and safely, however, the use of essential oils can also have severe consequences.  Essential oils are powerful and concentrated therefore they should never be applied to the skin in their undiluted form.

Carriers

Anything, which ‘carries’ the essential oils into the body, is known as a carrier. Amongst the many products, used vegetable oils and white lotions are the primary carriers. Unlike essential oils, which tend to be distilled when extracted, base oils tend to be cold pressed. This oil is unrefined retaining its natural properties, and although not as powerful as an essential oil, many base oils have unique remedial qualities of their own which supplement the treatment

The Power of Smell
Aromatherapy and especially inhalation exploits the power of smell to the human body and the effects that smells have on us should never be underestimated. Often smells evoke memory responses by association e.g. the smell of newly cut grass or a pine Christmas tree or perfume. Even the clinical smells of hospitals trigger our memory in some way reminding each of us of particular incidents or events.

As with most Holistic Treatments, my first visit will incorporate an in-depth consultation, taking account of factors such as nutrition, posture, general health; a combination of physical and mental well-being of the client. A number of essential oils are chosen which will aid the individuals’ health conditions and guidance on diet and lifestyle is offered as appropriate. A specialist technique is then employed to relieve tension, lymph drainage and improve the circulation thus helping the oils penetrate the skin, rejuvenating, alleviating aches and pains and generally promoting good health. The length of treatment will be determined after discussion with the therapist, who will advise and suggest a treatment programme in accordance with the clients’ expectations. Treatment time can vary between 30 minutes to one and a half hours. Regular 4-6 weekly Aromatherapy treatments instil a rejuvenated healthy state of well-being.

A good massage should benefit the recipient in a number of ways. Some of these benefits are listed below:

Improved circulation, elimination of toxins and lymphatic drainage
Promotes relaxation and eases muscular pain
Improved immune system
Better digestion
Promotes a general feeling of wellness
Eases feelings of anxiety, grief and depression

As essential oils have many different therapeutic qualities such as anti-bacterial, anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal, they can be very beneficial in treating physical and psychological complaints ranging from: - digestive and respiratory problems to depression, anxiety and stress, etc.

Are There Any Contra-Indications Associated With Aromatherapy Treatment?
Aromatherapy Massage requires administration by trained practitioners. As with the application of any substance to the human skin, it is possible for skin reactions to occur in clients with particularly sensitive skin. In this stance the professional therapist will perform a skin test before offering any treatments. Extra care is needed in the application of certain oils when the recipient is pregnant or breast-feeding, or has a history of epilepsy. Aromatherapy treatments must be administered by a professionally trained and fully qualified therapist.
