What is Thermo-Auricular Therapy?
Thermo-Auricular Therapy is the name used in the UK for Hopi Ear Candling. This unique ear treatment originates from the Shamen healers of the Native American Indians. The oldest Pueblo tribe, the Hopi people used the candles. Hopi means peace.

Today, Thermo-Auricular Therapy is used for ear, nose and throat conditions. The treatment works very well on sinus disorders, migraine, rhinitis and tinnitus. This treatment helps to balance pressure in the ear, stimulate blood flow and encourage the lymphatic system to remove waste and toxins. The candle creates a chimney effect, drawing out impurities and excess wax. The removal of ear wax is a very minor part of ear candling, in fact, rarely is any ear wax extracted at all. Ear wax is essential to our well-being. It acts as a shock absorber for sound waves, and along with the hair in our ears, it stops dust particles and foreign material that might pierce the ear drum. It is when we have was build up caused by noise, pollution, dust etc., however, that problems can arise.

History of Thermo-Auricular Therapy
Thermo-Auricular Therapy is also known as Hopi Ear Candles©, Ear Candling and Coning.

The Egyptians, Chinese, East Indians and Tibetans used this treatment over three thousand years ago.
Traditionally, the spiritual leader or shaman of the area would perform a ritual using clay pottery to heal or improve the person's spiritual condition. Initially the process was described as "coning" as cone shaped instruments made from pottery clay were used. These glazed cones had a double helix carved inside intended to create a downward spiral flow of smoke from the burning herbs that were in the cone into the ear canal. The smoke and heat cleansed the ear canal and debris was drawn out by a vacuum action.

In the New World, the Mayan, Aztec and Native North American cultures, especially the Hopi people, had particular rituals and healing ceremonies involving "ear cones". The art of candling was a form of spiritual healing, it was said, "to clear the mind and the senses", so they could meditate more deeply and open up their sensitivity. Nowadays, Thermo-Auricular Therapy is known to bring a great many benefits to people suffering with ear, nose and throat conditions, and it is also used for deep relaxation.

The Hopi candle is not a candle as such, but a hollow tube made out of organic cotton flax. To stiffen the flax, they are impregnated with extract of honey, beeswax, chamomile, sage and St John's Wort.
The candles that I use comply with European Safety Standards.

What to expect during a Thermo-Auricular Therapy Treatment

You will be invited to lie on the couch (fully-clothed), with your head to one side.
I will insert the candle gently into your ear canal and hold it in place for the duration
of the treatment.  I will rest my hands over your ear and there is no risk that the
  candle will burn you.

Once lit, the candle will act like a chimney drawing out impurities and balancing pressure. You may hear hissing and crackling during this process.  Many people enjoy the soothing warmth of the candle and have been known to fall asleep during the treatment. Both ears are treated during a treatment.

Once the candle has burned down to a safe level, it will be removed and extinguished. After the other ear has been treated, I will carry out some facial lymphatic drainage and perform some massage to the face and head. After the treatment, you should feel relaxed and the ear canals may feel clearer. You may find that excess wax comes to the surface several hours following the treatment. Please avoid pushing cotton buds into your ear.

Thermo-Auricular Therapy is a wonderful therapy that can be used on children and adults alike.

Some people find one treatment to be sufficient, however if a condition has been present for a period of time, a short course of treatments is recommended.

Most people benefit from a Thermo-Auricular Therapy treatment at the start of each new season, to help their body adjust to climate and environmental changes.

Please note that Thermo-Auricular Therapy is not suitable if grommets have been fitted or if you know that you have a perforated eardrum.
